As part of its commitment to the sustainable development of the territories where it operates, Coca-Cola Andina will support the Cerros de Renca Metropolitan Park by providing treated water from its plant in Renca for the irrigation of more than 80,000 native trees across an area of over 200 hectares.

The initiative, led by the Municipality of Renca, is supported by the Government of Santiago, developed by Corporación Cultiva and coordinated by Corporación 3xi, bringing together companies, foundations and organizations that have decided to contribute capabilities, resources and expertise to make this project possible.

As part of World Environment Day, more than one thousand people participated in a reforestation event and environmental activities, including employees from Coca-Cola Andina.

Renca Mayor Claudio Castro highlighted the importance of collaboration in making this initiative a reality. “Cities have very few opportunities to change their history. More than one hundred years ago, Santiago developed Santa Lucía Hill and later San Cristóbal Hill. Today, we have the opportunity to transform the Cerros de Renca into the next great metropolitan park of the capital. This project is supported by Teodoro Fernández’s Master Plan and an innovative water solution developed by Bonifacio Fernández, but its greatest strength lies not in the plans or the engineering. It lies in the ability to bring together the public sector, private organizations, civil society and thousands of residents around a shared vision.”

As part of this collaborative effort, Coca-Cola Andina will provide treated water from its Renca plant for the irrigation of the park.

In this regard, Gonzalo Said, Chairman of the Board of Coca-Cola Andina, stated: “Giving a second life to our treated water is a tangible way to transform a valuable resource into well-being for the community. We are proud to contribute to the Cerros de Renca Metropolitan Park by making this resource available to support the development of a major public space for thousands of residents. As part of the Renca community, we value the long-term relationship we have built over the years and the opportunity to contribute to the development of the community. This initiative reflects the value of public-private collaboration in driving practical and sustainable solutions with a positive impact on territories, combining innovation, responsible water stewardship and community development.”

The initiative will be implemented progressively between 2026 and 2030, combining reforestation, water infrastructure, trails, viewpoints, community spaces and citizen participation activities, with the aim of becoming one of Santiago’s most significant urban and environmental projects.

The planet’s resources don’t add up if we deplete them every year. This imbalance, highlighted by science, is a shared concern. We are called to adopt sustainability as a guiding principle and to change the way we manage social, economic, and environmental matters—to live within the rhythms and limits of our planet. Sustainability cannot be just another trendy term.

It is time to rethink how we live, move, and dress, but above all, how we produce and consume. Our current model is based on a linear economy of acquiring, using, and discarding. Finally, it is essential that this transition is measured by transparent criteria to prevent it from being used for “greenwashing.”

What Does Sustainability Mean?

Sustainability is based on the principle of meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs, always maintaining a balance between environmental protection, economic growth, and social development.

One of the key moments in elevating sustainability and firmly placing it on the public agenda was the Climate Summit (COP27). The summit extended an invitation to institutions, governments, and businesses, many of which used the opportunity to align their positions or publicly share their progress. A major topic in the COP27 negotiations was the support developed nations provide to emerging economies.

Another major catalyst for sustainability has been the growing discontent with the linear system of use-and-dispose, largely driven by a youth-led social movement demanding change. The face of this revolution is Greta Thunberg. “We will be remembered as the generation that did nothing while the Earth burned. We must reach carbon neutrality by 2025,” stated António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. And while science now makes this urgency undeniable, the need for change has been pressing for a long time.

At this point, there are no more excuses—at least not since the approval of the European Green Deal and, following its lead, the legislative framework developed by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition, including laws on the circular economy (España Circular 2030) and climate change (PLCCTE).

Regulation is the key. Without it, trust cannot exist. That is why standards are being established and sector-specific goals are being set, with targets for 2050 and annual reviews, notes Joaquín Garralda, Dean of Academic Affairs at IE Business School and an expert in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
